Ivanka Trump is on the headlines this week after she was bashed by the public for using an expensive soap in this time of a global pandemic. Apparently, people got upset even if the First Daughter’s intention was only to educate the public about proper hygiene because three million Americans have lost their jobs due to the national emergency, brought about by the coronavirus infection, and yet Ivanka and her family are splurging on a soap.
Likewise, they are trying to tell her that they are jobless now and have no means to earn money but her family still has the luxury to buy something expensive that common people usually get for a cheaper price. It is a soap and with its price of $40, some families can already buy food with that amount, and good for a week too.
The problematic video
On March 26, Ivanka Trump posted a video of her children - Arabella, 8, Joseph, 6, and Theodore, 3, washing their hands in the bathroom. She uploaded the clip on Instagram to encourage people to wash their hands often to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
“We ALL have a role to play to slow the spread!” she wrote as a caption for the video. “Wash your hands, ohhh...and turn off the sink with your elbow or a towel while you do to save water. Still a work in progress with these guys 10 days in.”
The public’s reaction and comments
However, those who have seen the video did not pay much attention to the proper hygiene that Ivanka Trump wants to impart. Rather, the public’s gazes were directed to the soap that the kids were using and after identifying that it is an Aesop soap brand, people pointed out that each bottle cost $40 and this discovery infuriated lots of people and they commented that the First Daughter could be “tone deaf” about the job losses and US economy in this time of the pandemic.
“Ivanka Trump posted a video of her children washing their hands, with $40 hand soap. What’s next, tomorrow she’ll tell us to eat $100 cakes?” while another one wrote on Twitter, “Again completely out of touch with the real world! I stock up twice a year when they have good sales from bath & body antibacterial soaps, hand sanitizer etc. $40 for a soap that costs $2 to make is just ridiculous and the fact that Ivanka is pushing it while people can't work.”
