As the results from the primaries are revealed this week with former vice president Joe Biden securing wins in key states like Michigan, the numbers are not looking too good on President Donald Trump’s end. According to one veteran political reporter, the numbers spell out a “five-alarm-fire” for Trump.
As Biden gains more of a lead now than ever, veteran reporter Tim Alberta looked over the numbers of the latest primaries and found that Trump and the GOP need to keep a close eye on Michigan due to the turnout seen during the Democratic primaries. When Trump won the 2016 election over Hillary Clinton, he won Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania straight, but not by much over Clinton. Should one state be removed from those three when it comes to votes, then the tables would turn to his opponent’s favor.
Trump has a reason to be nervous due to the fact that Livingston County in Michigan, known for being a Republican place with a very Republican demographic, had a sudden spike in votes in the Democratic primary - compared to 2016 which had 17, 591, there were 27, 458 votes cast. This made the turnout rise to up to 56 percent in the Democratic primary, and it all happened in a conservative suburb like Livingston County, showing how much change has occurred in a span of four years. Should this continue on until the November election, then Trump will be placed at a disadvantage and will further lose the election.
Nevertheless, Trump presses forward with his campaign. He previously filed a libel lawsuit against three news outlets regarding his welcoming of Russian interference or his relations with Russia in general. However, according to a piece from The Atlantic, this may do more harm than good as while the lawsuits are very unlikely to stick given that the pieces Trump is suing them for are all opinions rather than facts with the alleged defamatory statements vindicated rather than debunked, Trump will use this lawsuit to his advantage in his reelection campaign, continuing to call them fake news or something similar. This will also result in inciting fear on smaller news outlets for expressing any opinion regarding his relations with Russia.
