Zelensky Urges Faster NATO Action on Air Defense Missiles

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he held talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Wednesday to accelerate efforts to secure additional air defense interceptors for Ukraine as Russian aerial attacks continue.

In a post on social media platform X, Zelensky said he and Rutte discussed coordinating with NATO member states that have the required missile systems and the capacity to provide them. He emphasized that Ukraine urgently needs stronger air defense capabilities to protect its cities and critical infrastructure.

Zelensky said Rutte understands the growing security threats facing Ukraine and stressed that military assistance should not be delayed by administrative procedures. According to the Ukrainian leader, countries with available air defense missiles should move quickly to approve and deliver the systems.

“It is crucial to eliminate all bureaucracy and make the required political decisions,” Zelensky wrote, highlighting the need for faster action from Ukraine’s international partners.

Following the conversation, Rutte confirmed the discussion in a separate post on X, saying NATO is working closely with allied countries to maintain and strengthen Ukraine’s air defense network. He noted that the alliance remains committed to supporting Kyiv as it faces continued missile and drone attacks.

The latest exchange between Zelensky and Rutte comes as Ukraine continues to seek additional military assistance from Western allies, particularly advanced air defense systems and interceptors capable of countering long-range missile strikes. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly warned that expanding air defense coverage is essential to safeguarding civilians, energy facilities, and other critical infrastructure.

NATO members have pledged ongoing support for Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion, with air defense remaining one of Kyiv’s highest defense priorities. Zelensky has consistently called on partner nations to speed up deliveries of military equipment, arguing that timely decisions can help save lives and strengthen Ukraine’s ability to defend its territory.
