Nvidia is reportedly preparing to invest as much as $3 billion in Lancium, a Blackstone-backed power infrastructure developer involved in the Stargate artificial intelligence infrastructure initiative, as demand for energy-intensive AI data centers continues to accelerate.
According to a Friday report from The Information, Nvidia would initially invest $2 billion in Lancium in exchange for a 20% ownership stake. The chipmaker could provide an additional investment of up to $1 billion if Lancium reaches certain performance thresholds, potentially bringing Nvidia’s total commitment to $3 billion.
The reported Nvidia investment highlights the growing importance of power infrastructure to the global AI industry. As technology companies deploy increasingly powerful artificial intelligence models, data centers require substantial electricity supplies to operate advanced AI chips and computing systems.
Lancium specializes in developing large-scale power and data center infrastructure, positioning the company to benefit from rapidly expanding demand for AI computing capacity. Its backing from alternative asset manager Blackstone also reflects increased investor interest in infrastructure designed to support artificial intelligence workloads.
Nvidia, meanwhile, has become one of the most influential companies in the AI sector because of strong demand for its graphics processing units and other computing technologies. An investment in Lancium would extend Nvidia's exposure beyond AI semiconductors and into the physical infrastructure required to power next-generation data centers.
Lancium's involvement with Stargate adds further significance to the potential deal. Stargate is a major AI infrastructure initiative aimed at dramatically expanding computing capacity in the United States, requiring extensive investment in data centers, energy generation and related infrastructure.
The structure of the reported agreement would give Nvidia a substantial stake in Lancium after its initial $2 billion commitment, while the additional $1 billion would depend on the infrastructure developer achieving specified targets.
Neither Nvidia nor Lancium immediately responded to Reuters requests for comment on the reported investment.
If completed under the reported terms, the Nvidia-Lancium deal would underscore how the AI infrastructure boom is increasingly connecting semiconductor companies, data center developers and energy providers as the industry races to secure the computing power and electricity needed for continued AI expansion.
