A Delta Air Lines flight carrying more than 200 people made an emergency landing at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Saturday after the flight crew reported fumes in the cockpit.
Delta Flight 2204 was traveling from Atlanta to Orlando, Florida, when the crew encountered the issue shortly after takeoff. The pilots declared an emergency and made the decision to return to Atlanta as a safety precaution.
The aircraft landed safely at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the United States. There were no immediate reports of injuries following the emergency landing.
According to Delta Air Lines, Flight 2204 was carrying 199 passengers and six crew members, bringing the total number of people aboard the aircraft to 205.
After the plane returned to Atlanta, passengers were evacuated using the aircraft's emergency slides. Delta said the travelers were subsequently being transferred to another flight so they could continue their journey to Orlando.
The airline did not immediately provide additional details about what caused the fumes in the cockpit or whether the aircraft experienced a mechanical problem. The decision to return to Atlanta came shortly after the crew became aware of the fumes and declared the emergency.
Emergency landings involving reports of smoke, fumes or unusual odors in an aircraft cabin or cockpit are treated as significant safety concerns because their source may not be immediately known. Flight crews can choose to return to the departure airport or divert to another suitable airport when such situations occur.
The incident disrupted the passengers' journey to Florida, but Delta's arrangements for a replacement flight allowed the affected travelers to continue toward Orlando.
The Delta emergency landing in Atlanta adds to aviation incidents in which flight crews have taken precautionary action following potential safety issues shortly after departure. No injuries were immediately reported among the 199 customers or six crew members aboard Flight 2204.
