President Joe Biden has opted to take a more diplomatic approach when it came to dealing with China as well as Taiwan. However, with the US continuing to communicate with the island nation, China’s foreign minister has warned Biden against showing support for Taiwan especially due to its long-running dispute with the Communist nation.
Speaking at a news conference, China’s foreign minister Wang Yi spoke on Beijing’s goals for regional expansion as well as dismissing criticism regarding the current situation in Hong Kong. Wang said Biden and the US must reverse the practices made by the previous administration towards showing support for Taiwan. Donald Trump angered China by sending Cabinet officials to Taiwan, which insists on independence despite China’s claims of unification. China previously threatened invasion or war should Taiwan formally declare independence or prolong talks of unification.
“The Chinese government has no room for compromise,” said Wang during the conference. “We urge the new US administration to fully understand the high sensitivity of the Taiwan issue and completely change the previous administration’s dangerous practices of crossing the line and playing with fire.”
Biden previously expressed his concerns regarding Hong Kong and Taiwan in his phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Despite seeking to have civil relations between the US and China, Biden has not indicated any change in reversing the Trump administration’s sanctions on China in terms of trade, technology, and human rights. The US has accused China of human rights violations especially in terms of its treatment toward Uyghur Muslims in the Xinjiang province.
Shortly after taking office, Biden previously signed a series of orders that would reverse Trump-era policies and actions, while also signing orders that would put importance on climate change. However, 12 Republican-led states have filed a lawsuit against Biden, citing that he lacks the constitutional authority to implement rules surrounding greenhouse gases.
The federal lawsuit was filed by Missouri’s Republican Attorney General Eric Schmitt. Schmitt argued that Biden violated the separation of powers clause in the Constitution as Congress has the authority to regulate greenhouse gases, not the president. The GOP-led lawsuit also argues that the economic effects from Biden’s order would be disastrous.
