Trump Administration Moves to Deport Iranian Academic Yousof Azizi Over Alleged Visa Fraud

Trump Administration Moves to Deport Iranian Academic Yousof Azizi Over Alleged Visa Fraud.

Yousof Azizi, an Iranian academic and media commentator known for his appearances on Sky News, BBC Persian, and the Middle East Institute, is facing deportation after being arrested by U.S. immigration authorities on Monday. The Department of Homeland Security accused Azizi of lying on his visa application, specifically denying past membership in Iran's Student Basij Organization — a paramilitary group affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps — between 2006 and 2010. Washington has designated the IRGC as a foreign terrorist organization, making any alleged connection a serious immigration concern.

Azizi, a PhD candidate at Virginia Tech's School of Public and International Affairs, originally entered the United States in 2013 on a student visa. DHS stated his visa status was later terminated after he failed to re-enroll for the Fall 2025 semester. He is currently being held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody, with officials confirming he will receive due process throughout the proceedings.

The arrest has drawn sharp criticism from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which demanded Azizi's immediate release. CAIR accused the Trump administration of using ICE as a political tool to silence Iranian voices, particularly those critical of American and Israeli military actions in the region. The organization linked his detention to a broader pattern of targeting individuals who have spoken out against U.S. foreign policy.

This case is the latest in a string of immigration enforcement actions that rights groups say disproportionately affect Muslim academics, students, and activists. Critics argue these moves raise serious concerns about free speech and due process under the current administration's immigration crackdown. The Trump administration has not provided specific evidence publicly to support its claims against Azizi, and his representatives had not commented at the time of reporting.
