A 2025 measles outbreak in New Mexico cost nearly $5.4 million, highlighting the significant financial burden infectious disease outbreaks place on healthcare systems and public health agencies, according to a new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
Researchers from the New Mexico Department of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that the outbreak generated more than $53,000 in costs per confirmed case. The analysis covered 100 measles infections, including 57 adults and 43 children, along with expenses involving 205 quarantined contacts and 133 public health responders.
The outbreak originated in an undervaccinated community in Texas in January 2025 before spreading into neighboring New Mexico in February. The CDC officially declared the outbreak over in September 2025.
The study found that public health response efforts accounted for the largest share of costs, totaling approximately $3.2 million. Vaccination campaigns alone represented about $2.1 million of that amount, underscoring the extensive resources required to contain highly contagious diseases such as measles.
Direct medical expenses reached roughly $290,000, including $238,000 for seven hospitalizations, $32,000 for 79 outpatient visits, and $20,000 for 1,286 laboratory tests.
Researchers also estimated that productivity losses from missed work totaled nearly $1.6 million. These costs included lost wages for adult patients, caregivers of infected children under 15, quarantined contacts, and one fatal case linked to the outbreak.
The authors acknowledged that the overall economic impact may be even higher because certain expenses, including over-the-counter medications and travel costs for medical care, were not available for analysis.
The findings come as measles cases continue to rise across the United States. More than 2,300 infections have already been confirmed in 2026, exceeding the total reported in 2025 and marking the country's highest annual measles count in 35 years amid declining vaccination rates.
Katherine Wells of Lubbock Public Health, who was not involved in the study, said outbreaks create far-reaching consequences beyond confirmed infections. She warned that declining vaccination coverage weakens community protection and stressed that fully understanding the economic and public health costs of measles outbreaks is essential for strengthening disease prevention efforts.
