Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed that a North Korean ballistic missile was used by Russia in a deadly airstrike on Kyiv, killing 12 civilians. The missile, identified as a KN-23 (KN-23A), hit a residential building in the Sviatoshynskyi district during a large-scale Russian attack.
Zelenskiy stated on X that Ukraine’s intelligence services are investigating the strike, which marks a troubling escalation in Russian-North Korean military cooperation. A Ukrainian military source told Reuters that Russia launched seven ballistic missiles in total, some identified as Iskander-M or KN-23 types. The KN-23, known for carrying warheads up to one tonne, is reportedly more destructive than its Russian counterparts.
Russia has not commented on the allegations, while both Moscow and Pyongyang have denied weapons transfers, which would violate United Nations arms embargoes. However, according to Ukraine’s military intelligence, North Korea has supplied Russia with significant weaponry since late 2023, including artillery, rocket systems, thousands of troops, and 148 ballistic missiles, specifically KN-23 and KN-24 models.
The missile strike in Kyiv has heightened concerns globally. South Korea and its allies fear North Korea may apply insights from the Ukraine war to future regional conflicts, raising tensions across Asia.
This growing Russia–North Korea alliance, driven by Moscow’s international isolation since the 2022 Ukraine invasion, presents a new threat dynamic. As ballistic missile usage increases in the conflict, the origin and capability of such weapons are drawing global scrutiny.
The attack has prompted urgent rescue efforts in Kyiv, with emergency teams searching the rubble for survivors. The international community remains on alert as evidence of deeper North Korean involvement in the war emerges.
