President-elect Donald Trump announced Tuesday his nomination of Kimberly Guilfoyle as the next U.S. ambassador to Greece, a move that has already drawn significant attention. Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host and longtime partner of Donald Trump Jr., has no formal diplomatic experience but has been a vocal supporter of Trump throughout his campaigns.
“For many years, Kimberly has been a close friend and ally,” Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social. “Her extensive experience in law, media, and politics, combined with her intellect, makes her the perfect choice to represent the United States in Greece.”
Trump also highlighted Guilfoyle’s potential to strengthen bilateral relations with Greece, focusing on defense, trade, and economic cooperation.
Guilfoyle, accepting the nomination, expressed gratitude and confidence. “As ambassador, I look forward to delivering on the Trump agenda, supporting our Greek allies, and fostering peace and prosperity,” she wrote.
The Senate will need to confirm her appointment before she can assume the role.
A Polarizing Nomination Amid Allegations
Guilfoyle’s nomination has reignited debate over Trump’s tendency to appoint loyalists and family connections to key government positions. Her lack of diplomatic experience has raised eyebrows, with critics questioning her ability to navigate the complexities of U.S.-Greece relations.
Compounding the controversy is Guilfoyle’s departure from Fox News in 2018 amid allegations of sexual harassment. A former assistant accused her of misconduct, which Guilfoyle’s lawyer has vehemently denied, calling the claims “patently false.”
Despite these concerns, Guilfoyle has remained a prominent figure within Trump’s inner circle. She served as national chair of the Trump Victory Finance Committee and spoke at the 2024 Republican National Convention, cementing her status as a trusted ally of the Trump family.
Trump’s administration has previously faced criticism for appointing close associates to prominent roles. Recent examples include Charles Kushner, Ivanka Trump’s father-in-law, nominated as ambassador to France, and Massad Boulos, Tiffany Trump’s father-in-law, named an adviser on Arab and Middle Eastern affairs.
Public Reactions to the Nomination
The announcement has sparked divided opinions online, with supporters and critics taking to social media to voice their views:
- @PoliticalTruths: “Kimberly Guilfoyle as ambassador to Greece? This feels more like a family reunion than diplomacy!”
- @MAGA2024: “She’s smart, articulate, and loyal. A perfect pick to represent American interests abroad!”
- @GlobalAffairsWatch: “This is yet another example of Trump prioritizing loyalty over qualifications. Greece deserves better.”
- @GreeceStrong: “Guilfoyle’s nomination might improve relations, but her past allegations could complicate international diplomacy.”
- @FoxNewsFan: “I miss her on The Five, but as an ambassador? Not so sure about that.”
- @DemocracyFirst: “Nepotism at its finest. When will these nominations prioritize experience over personal connections?”
A Growing Pattern of Loyalty-Driven Nominations
Kimberly Guilfoyle’s nomination underscores the ongoing trend of Trump relying on close allies and family connections for high-profile appointments. While her supporters praise her loyalty and media acumen, critics argue that her lack of diplomatic credentials could undermine her effectiveness in the role.
The Senate’s upcoming confirmation hearings will likely probe her qualifications and address the lingering allegations that have followed her career. As the U.S. seeks to strengthen its ties with Greece, Guilfoyle’s potential appointment could either foster new opportunities or spark additional controversy.
