Mystery drones flying over New Jersey and New York continue to puzzle both lawmakers and the FBI, as no clear answers emerged during a high-stakes congressional hearing on Tuesday. For over a month, unidentified drones—some reportedly the size of small cars—have been sighted near sensitive military installations and infrastructure. Despite sharp questioning from lawmakers, the FBI admitted it remains unclear who or what is behind the incidents.
During the Homeland Security Committee hearing, chaired by Representative August Pfluger (R-Texas), frustration mounted over the agency’s inability to attribute the sightings to any individual, group, or nation. FBI Assistant Director Robert Wheeler Jr., tasked with addressing the mystery, conceded, “We do not attribute [the sightings] to an individual or a group yet. We’re actively investigating.”
The lack of definitive answers has fueled speculation, with theories ranging from espionage to extraterrestrial involvement. Pfluger encapsulated the confusion by bluntly asking, “What is going on in New Jersey?”
Mounting Concerns Over Potential Threats
Lawmakers expressed alarm over the drones' proximity to critical sites, including the Picatinny Arsenal and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. Representative Nicole Malliotakis (R-New York) warned, “What if they were carrying chemical weapons or something?” While Wheeler acknowledged the spectrum of threats—from adversarial state actors to nuisance drones—he admitted the agency lacks actionable intelligence.
Pressed on whether drones could be shot down, Wheeler confirmed that existing authority allows for neutralizing unmanned aerial systems (UAS) near sensitive areas. However, he offered no explanation as to why such measures have not yet been taken.
The drone sightings have expanded beyond New Jersey, with Brooklyn residents reporting up to 12 drones near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on Sunday night. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy assured residents on Monday that authorities are taking the incidents “deadly seriously.” However, he added, “These are apparently very sophisticated. The minute you get eyes on them, they go dark.”
Public Reaction: Confusion and Concern
Social media lit up with reactions as netizens weighed in on the FBI’s revelations:
- @JerseyWatcher: “FBI says they don’t know who’s behind the drones? That’s not exactly reassuring!”
- @NYCSkeptic: “Drones the size of cars near military bases? This sounds straight out of a sci-fi movie.”
- @ConcernedPatriot: “If these are state actors, why hasn’t the government taken action? We need answers, not excuses.”
- @TechGuru: “Could these drones be autonomous? The lack of clarity from the FBI is shocking.”
- @DroneHunter: “I’m more worried about what’s not being said. What do they know that we don’t?”
- @FreedomWatch: “New Jersey deserves better than vague assurances. This is a serious security breach!”
FBI’s Next Steps
The FBI’s Newark Field Office has received over 3,000 tips related to the drones and continues to investigate. Wheeler urged the public to report sightings by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI or emailing [email protected]. However, the agency’s inability to provide concrete answers has left many uneasy, as questions linger about the drones' purpose and origins.
