US President Joe Biden has been placed under pressure over the Afghanistan evacuation that saw over 100,000 Afghans and Americans flown out of the war-torn country upon the resurgence of the Taliban. Following the previous bombing at Kabul that led to 13 US soldiers dead, Biden warns that such a scenario is likely to happen again as the US reaches the end of its evacuation efforts.
Over the weekend, Biden delivered a warning of another possible bombing happening in Kabul again as evacuation efforts continue. This comes as Biden ordered a drone strike over the Islamic militant group ISIS-K, who claimed responsibility for the bombing that killed 13 US soldiers and dozens of Afghans looking to flee the country. The US leader revealed that his military commanders warned of another bombing that may occur in the next 24-36 hours.
“I directed them to take every possible measure to prioritize force protection,” said Biden after meeting with his national security team over the matter. The suicide bombing that occurred last week has also forced the US military to coordinate with the insurgent group to prevent another bombing from happening as the country reaches the last stretch of its evacuation efforts to meet the August 31 deadline.
Prior to Biden’s comments, the Pentagon confirmed that it successfully took down two high-profile targets -- logistics experts of the extremist group -- while wounding another during its retaliatory drone strike in Afghanistan. During a news conference in Washington following the incident, Major General Hank Taylor said that no civilians were hurt during the strike.
Meanwhile, Biden, along with first lady Dr. Jill Biden, were present during the dignified transfer of the US troops that were killed in the bombing in Kabul airport. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken were also part of the group of dignitaries that were present at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. Biden’s attendance during the dignified transfer is among the solemn duties fulfilled by the US President.
Biden’s attendance at the dignified transfer also comes as he undergoes harsh criticism, mostly from Republicans, but also including Democrats regarding the evacuation efforts being made.
