The latest installment of “Jack Ryan” opened many possibilities plot-wise for Jack (John Krasinski) and James Greer (Wendell Pierce). It is then not surprising if some story elements from the second season would be further developed in future episodes. It then helps to remember some significant plot points from season 2 as fans await the announcement of “Jack Ryan” season 3’s release date.
Jack’s love interest was no-show in season 2
One of the biggest questions left unanswered from season 2 was not about Jack and Greer’s mission. It was about the titular character’s personal life as his love interest, Dr. Cathy Mueller (Abbie Cornish), was a complete no-show in season 2. She was not even mentioned in any of the episodes. But it was implied in season 2 episode 1 that Jack is likely single noting that he had no issues having a one night stand with someone else.
Not mentioning Cathy could mean two things: Amazon Prime Video’s version of Jack is not built to have a personal life or it provides a chance for her story to be left open. The latter would mean that she might return in “Jack Ryan” season 3.
Greer is done with fieldwork
Season 2 has been physically straining for Greer, who also learned he has a serious medical condition for which she needs an operation. As if it was not enough, he was also put in the most danger after being captured and thrown into a prison camp. All those experiences led to Greer declaring he had enough these dangerous assignments and it is time to admit he could be more helpful behind a desk a now.
This is one of the major developments in the show’s plot so far. Greer used to detest desk duty, but circumstances have forced him to change his stance. This does not necessarily mean Greer will not return in “Jack Ryan” season 3. But this suggests that someone else might have to accompany Jack in his next mission.
Jack established a good bond with Mike November
That new partner might as well be Mike November (Michael Kelly), who was first introduced in season 2. While Greer was in captive, Mike became Jack’s new trusted partner in the field and he has helped Jack much more than fans may have realized.
Jack was ready to shoot a president of the foreign nation in the head. While the president was so corrupt, that action would have also guaranteed Jack’s removal from the CIA. Luckily, Mike was there to talk some sense into him. And this kind of dynamic might just be what Jack needs in “Jack Ryan” season 3.
