The finale of the second season has left some clues that drastic changes could happen in “Jack Ryan” season 3. For one, Jack (John Krasinski) may have a new field partner for his next mission considering the effects of their last assignment to James Greer (Wendell Pierce).

Jack Ryan’ season 3 plot speculations: Jack might have someone else with him in his next mission

There is no question about the working chemistry of Jack and James. But James was very adamant when he declared that his time of joining fieldwork, and he had good reasons. “When you work behind a desk, your friends don't get killed,” James told Jack in the season 2 finale. “But it's the work, it's the real work that still needs to get done. And if I can't do it, someone else has to."

James has a serious medical condition and he had it rough in Venezuela when he was captured and taken to a prison camp. So his mention of desk duty in the season 2 finale could very well be a foreshadowing of his new duties in “Jack Ryan” season 3. But that also needs Jack will be needing a new partner.

Jack could go solo, his skills prove he is capable of that. However, the show works best with various players in the mission, so it would not be surprising to see Jack with a new field partner in “Jack Ryan” season 3. The series can write in a new character, but it is also very likely for a familiar face, such as Mike November (Michael Kelly), to come back and go with Jack in the next mission.

It makes more sense to have Mike than a new face paired with “Jack Ryan” season 3. What they went through together in season 2 was enough to build the trust that Jack would need for a life-and-death mission. After what happened in Mike’s assignment, it is also unlikely for him to be welcomed in Venezuela again.

Jack Ryan’ season 3 release date: Will the new episodes arrive this year?

Meanwhile, it would be difficult to imagine the series without James in it, and it is very unlikely for the character to be written off in “Jack Ryan” season 3, too. This could mean that he will help in Jack’s next mission in other ways.

Just thinking about the plot possibilities for “Jack Ryan” season 3 is enough to keep the fans excited about the series. However, it might take a while before new episodes arrive. It was reported that the scripts were just being developed last January while seasons 1 and 2 took over a year to complete production and post-production. This increases the chance for the third installment to be released in the first half of 2021 instead of late 2020.
