Diplomatic tensions between Iran and the United States have reached a critical breaking point as President Donald Trump issued a firm Tuesday night deadline demanding Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz — a strategic waterway responsible for approximately one-fifth of global oil and natural gas shipments — or face devastating military consequences.

Iran responded to a U.S. proposal brokered through Pakistan by rejecting a temporary ceasefire, instead demanding a permanent resolution to the conflict. Tehran's 10-point counter-proposal included regional peace, safe maritime passage protocols, the lifting of international sanctions, and post-war reconstruction support. Pakistan had originally proposed an immediate ceasefire followed by broader peace negotiations to be finalized within 15 to 20 days.

Trump dismissed Iran's response outright, warning that the country could be "taken out" within a single night and threatening to destroy Iranian power plants and bridges before midnight EDT on Wednesday. Iranian military officials fired back, calling Trump's statements delusional and labeling his threats as baseless and arrogant. Iran's UN envoy condemned Trump's social media warnings as incitement to terrorism and potential war crimes under international law — a concern echoed by independent legal and humanitarian experts.

Military activity continued to intensify across the region. U.S. and Israeli forces struck Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, damaging research facilities including an artificial intelligence data center. Israel also launched airstrikes on government infrastructure throughout Iran, while Iranian missiles targeted Israeli territory and Gulf nations including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain activated emergency air defense systems in response.

Amid the escalating conflict, U.S. forces successfully retrieved a downed American airman from Iranian territory over the weekend. The war, now nearly six weeks old, has claimed thousands of lives, driven up global fuel prices, and raised significant economic and political concerns both regionally and internationally.
