Civil rights activist Phillip Agnew, who just joined Bernie Sanders' team for the latter’s presidential campaign, is under scrutiny for the tweets he made more than a decade ago to then-FLOTUS Michelle Obama. He has already apologized for the offending posts he made saying that he is no longer the same man who made those tweets back in 2009.
“I am not my tweets from 2009,” Agnew explained, Newsweek reported. His previous tweets where he called Michelle Obama “ugly” resurfaced after he announced joining Bernie Sanders’ team on March 7.
In one tweet, Agnew said that Michelle is an odd-looking woman. “Random thought while standing on Gas Station: Michel Obama is an odd-looking woman,” he tweeted in October 2009. “I'd call her ugly but I don't want the backlash.”
It was followed by another insulting post two months later. “Michelle Obama is just not pretty,” Agnew tweeted. “I've tried to look at her from every angle possible.”
Aside from posting insulting tweets about Michelle Obama, Agnew also posted a conspiracy theory in 2011 saying that the terrorist Osama Bin Laden wasn’t actually killed by the U.S. Bin Laden was killed on May 2, 2011, when Barack Obama was still the President.
In 2016, Agnew posted a cartoon on Instagram that seemed to suggest the U.S. deserved to be attacked on 9/11 due to its military interventions abroad. It was posted on the 15th anniversary of the devastating attacks.
Philip Agnew was still 23 years old when he tweeted those tweets and explained that he has changed since then. “I am sorry for the remarks that I made,” he said in a statement. “I typed them as a young, immature and insecure boy who thought he was forever invisible and 'invincible.' My comments were shallow, careless, sexist and cruel.”
“While my past tweets were decidedly not about blackness nor complexion not black womxn, I took part in a misogynoirist culture that ignorantly objectifies black womxn as a whole,” Agnew added. “And I take full responsibility for my words and actions. Thank you for holding me accountable.”
