Casual Academic, Western Sydney University
Douglas Brown has completed his PhD entitled 'Domestic Architecture and the Perception of Risk in Bushfire-Prone Areas'. This research was undertaking in the Faculty of Architecture, Design & Planning at the University of Sydney. He is currently a casual academic in the Bushfire Protection and Building Construction courses at Western Sydney University. In 2016 he set up a research consultancy called Bushfire Architecture which provides design advice to building professionals with clients in bushfire-prone areas. He gave a paper entitled 'How do Residents in Bushfire Prone Areas View the Bushfire Risk of their Homes?’ at the AFAC 2013 Conference. In February 2013 he had an article entitled: 'Wildland Home Defense – An Architectural Perspective' in the Jan/Feb 2013 edition of ‘Wildfire Magazine’ which is produced by the International Association of Wildland Fire. In 2012 his work was on display at the Wildland Fire Safety Summit in Sydney. In 2011 his research was part of the Emergency Shelter Exhibition at Customs House, Sydney and he was shortlisted for the 2011 Telstra Innovation Challenge People’s Choice Award. In 2010 he completed his Masters in Design Science, Sustainable Design at the University of Sydney after undertaking a Graduate Internship with the NSW Rural Fire Service in 2009. He is a Bushfire CRC PhD scholarship recipient and an Associate Student of the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC.
