French far-right National Rally (RN) president Jordan Bardella is facing mounting political pressure over allegations of antisemitism, raising questions about the party’s efforts to distance itself from its controversial past ahead of France’s 2027 presidential election.
The controversy emerged after investigative outlet Mediapart published alleged antisemitic and conspiratorial messages attributed to Bardella during his teenage years. The 31-year-old politician rejected the accusations, describing the messages as fabricated and promising defamation lawsuits.
Former RN candidate Joseph Martin has called for Bardella to step aside while the allegations are investigated, highlighting what he considers inconsistent treatment within the party.
Martin lost RN support during the 2024 elections after journalists uncovered a social media post initially considered antisemitic. Although the party later accepted that his comments were not antisemitic, Martin lost the election and was subsequently denied another candidacy.
Political analyst Gilles Ivaldi of Sciences Po questioned whether the RN’s transformation under Marine Le Pen represents genuine ideological change or primarily a political strategy.
The controversy threatens Bardella’s growing influence and could complicate Le Pen’s fourth presidential bid. She currently leads opinion polls after a Paris appeals court cleared her to run in July.
Despite the allegations, RN officials insist Bardella retains strong public support. An IFOP survey commissioned by LCI television found that 74% of French respondents considered the alleged messages troubling if authentic, while only 21% reported a worsening opinion of Bardella.
Analysts believe the scandal is unlikely to significantly affect the RN’s core supporters, whose main concerns include immigration, crime, purchasing power and rising energy costs.
However, the allegations could weaken Le Pen’s appeal among moderate conservative voters during a potential presidential runoff.
The controversy also comes amid reported tensions between Bardella and Le Pen following his growing political independence and disagreements over the party’s relationship with Marion Maréchal.
Although Le Pen publicly supports Bardella, political opponents believe his influence has diminished.
Former presidential candidate Eric Zemmour suggested Bardella was becoming increasingly marginalized within the National Rally, casting doubt on his prospects of becoming prime minister.
With France’s presidential election approaching, the antisemitism allegations could test both Bardella’s political future and the RN’s broader efforts to establish credibility among mainstream voters.
