Elon Musk has poured approximately $366 million into the 2026 US midterm elections, making the Tesla and SpaceX CEO potentially the largest individual political donor of the election cycle as Republicans fight to retain control of Congress.
According to campaign finance records cited by the New York Times, Musk contributed $276 million since July, directing substantial financial support toward Republican candidates and political action committees. A spokesperson for his super PAC, America PAC, confirmed the figures.
The largest portion of Musk's third-quarter political donations, totaling $158 million, went to the Senate Leadership Fund, a Republican super PAC associated with Senate Majority Leader John Thune. The organization focuses on helping Republican candidates secure Senate seats.
Another $20 million was allocated to the Congressional Leadership Fund, which supports House Republicans and is aligned with House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Meanwhile, America PAC received $76 million to strengthen Republican campaigns across seven competitive states and nearly three dozen House races ahead of the November 3 elections.
Musk also directed $10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC, which supports Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's Senate campaign. Recent polling indicates a competitive contest between Paxton and Democratic candidate James Talarico.
Additional contributions included $10 million to the Republican Governors Association and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association.
The billionaire's political spending comes amid growing scrutiny from House Democrats, who have demanded investigations into Musk's federal contracts through SpaceX and his previous leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency under President Donald Trump.
An America PAC representative said approximately $90 million spent during the current election cycle covered expenses from earlier political activities or supported unrelated initiatives. These included an unsuccessful Wisconsin Supreme Court campaign and a program offering $1 million payments to registered voters who signed a petition supporting free speech and gun rights.
The New York Times also reported that Musk contributed additional funds through organizations that do not publicly disclose their donors, suggesting his overall political spending could be higher.
During the previous US presidential election cycle, Musk spent approximately $290 million supporting Republican political efforts as Trump defeated former Vice President Kamala Harris.
His latest contributions underscore his expanding financial influence in American politics as Republicans prepare for closely contested congressional elections.
