Chicago, May 15, 2017 -- John Marshall Law School Professor Alberto Bernabe was recently chosen to join the Academia de Jurisprudencia y Legislación in Puerto Rico. The Academia is a branch of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation in Spain and recognizes highly regarded legal scholars for their contributions to the development of the law. “Becoming a member of the Academia is quite an honor,” said Bernabe. “In more than 30 years, it has selected only 26 people to become members. Currently, the organization has 19 members, only five of whom live outside Puerto Rico.”

Bernabe began his career as a judicial clerk at the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico. He has been teaching in the United States since 1990, but has continued to stay abreast of the law and the legal profession in Puerto Rico. He has published numerous law review and magazine articles about Puerto Rican law and has spoken at conferences on a variety of topics related to the law in Puerto Rico including professional responsibility, torts, media law, access to justice, globalization and legal education. He has also taught as a visiting professor at the University of Puerto Rico School of Law several times and served as visiting editor of the Puerto Rico Bar Association’s Law Review.
Bernabe will be formally inducted into the Academia in a ceremony in Puerto Rico later this year.
Bernabe joined the faculty of John Marshall in 1992 and teaches Torts and Professional Responsibility.
