Austin, TX, January 9, 2018 - Gemalto (Euronext NL0000400653 GTO), the world leader in digital security, has earned AT&T certification for its award-winning Cinterion LTE-M IoT module expanding cellular connectivity possibilities for IoT solutions. Using very little energy and IoT-optimized bandwidth, the Gemalto module enables highly efficient use of existing 4G networks. It is ideal for IoT solutions with limited power budgets and which do not require high data throughput such as metering, asset management, remote monitoring and control, healthcare, security systems, POS and smart city applications. Early pilot programs are deploying in January with volume shipping to follow in Q1 2018.

A seamless migration path towards global LTE-M
The Cinterion EMS31 LTE-M module is designed based on flexible RF which supports evolving multi-band and multi-technology use. With support for 10 LTE frequency bands, future versions will enable additional bands to allow for global coverage. This eliminates the need for multiple variants for simplified global deployment and a very fast time to market. The module shares a common footprint with other Cinterion Industrial Modules providing a seamless migration path for existing 2G, 3G and 4G solutions.
Setting new standards for power efficiency and responsiveness
A highly efficient Transport Layer Security (TLS) implementation significantly speeds the module's secure digital handshake for improved power savings. In addition, proprietary technology enables quick wake-up and shut down that is 15 times faster than traditional systems. This Gemalto-unique feature improves responsiveness, reduces latency issues and significantly saves power to extend battery life for power sensitive applications such as tracking and tracing devices.
eSIM ready for easy connectivity bundling
The module can be customized with embedded SIM technology (eSIM) to support easy IoT connectivity offer bundling. Combining two components into one reduces module size and total cost of ownership while simplifying development and logistics and strengthening tamper resistance and security.
"Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) are growing at a compound annual growth rate of 206 percent and LTE-M networks are being deployed all over the world," said Sam Lucero, senior principal analyst for IoT at IHS Markit. "Gemalto's EMS31 LTE-M is well positioned to be a leader in the category supporting a multitude of low bandwidth, mobile IoT use cases."
"The robust Cinterion LTE M wireless module combines the longevity, reliability and ubiquity of LTE cellular connectivity with the efficiency and cost economy of Low-Power Wide-Area technologies - exactly what the majority of new IoT solutions require," said Andreas Haegele, SVP IoT Products, Gemalto. "Together with AT&T, Gemalto is revolutionizing cellular possibilities for the IoT, allowing connected assets, smart homes and smart cities to instantly connect and stay securely connected over the long lifetime of IoT devices."
