French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will support Lebanon in preparing for potential negotiations with Israel, even though Paris will not directly participate in the talks. Speaking during a joint press conference with Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Macron emphasized that France’s primary goal is to assist Lebanese authorities in strengthening their position ahead of any diplomatic discussions.
Macron clarified that France’s absence from the negotiating table should not be seen as a setback. Instead, he described participation as “secondary,” stressing that Lebanon’s interests are better served by receiving broad international support. According to Macron, providing expertise, guidance, and diplomatic backing can be just as valuable as being physically present during negotiations.
France has long maintained strong historical, political, and cultural ties with Lebanon, positioning itself as a key ally in times of crisis. In recent efforts, Paris sought to secure a formal role in Lebanon-Israel negotiations. However, both Israel and the United States reportedly opposed France’s direct involvement, limiting its participation to a supportive capacity.
Despite this resistance, France remains committed to contributing to regional stability in the Middle East. Macron highlighted that cooperation among international partners is essential for achieving meaningful progress in Lebanon-Israel relations. By offering strategic assistance and leveraging its diplomatic experience, France aims to help Lebanon navigate complex geopolitical challenges.
The development comes at a time when tensions in the region continue to demand careful diplomatic engagement. Macron’s remarks signal a pragmatic approach, prioritizing outcomes over formal roles. For Lebanon, gaining access to multiple sources of support, including France, could strengthen its negotiating stance and improve prospects for constructive dialogue with Israel.
This evolving situation underscores the importance of international collaboration in addressing Middle East conflicts, with France positioning itself as a key supporter behind the scenes.
