Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned on Friday of intense battles near Pokrovsk, a key logistics hub in eastern Ukraine, as Russian forces press forward with daily claims of capturing nearby villages. In his nightly address, Zelenskiy said the area remains the top focus for Ukraine’s military leadership.
Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi described Pokrovsk and five other sectors along the 1,000-kilometer front line as the most difficult theaters of combat. He emphasized that Russia is paying a “maximum price” for its ongoing summer offensive.
Pokrovsk, once home to about 60,000 people and host to Ukraine’s only coking coal mine vital for its steel industry, has been under mounting pressure for months. Moscow recently announced the capture of three nearby villages — Zvirove, Novoekonomichne, and Novotoretske — although Ukrainian officials have not confirmed these losses. The Ukrainian General Staff reported continued Russian attempts to breach defenses around Zvirove and Novoekonomichne.
Fighting has also intensified in Ukraine’s northern Sumy region, where Russian troops seek to create what President Vladimir Putin calls a “buffer zone.” Ukrainian forces reportedly recaptured the village of Kindrativka, according to the military blog DeepState, though there has been no official confirmation.
The renewed Russian push underscores the strategic significance of Pokrovsk’s rail and road networks. Its fall could disrupt Ukrainian supply lines and provide Moscow with a critical foothold in eastern Ukraine. The battle for the city highlights the grinding nature of the conflict, which began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022 and continues to reshape the region’s security landscape.
