President-elect Donald Trump remains steadfast in his support for Pete Hegseth, his nominee for Secretary of Defense, despite allegations of excessive drinking and uncertainty over Senate confirmation. Hegseth, a former Fox News commentator and Iraq War veteran, has been a controversial pick, but Trump insists he has the qualifications to excel in the role.
In an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump addressed reports claiming that Hegseth struggled with drinking after his military deployment. "I’ve spoken to people who know him well, and they say he does not have a drinking problem," Trump told host Kristen Welker. He further emphasized Hegseth’s academic and professional achievements, highlighting his Ivy League education and military service.
Despite Trump’s defense, Hegseth’s path to confirmation is far from guaranteed. Trump admitted that he has not received assurances from Senators regarding their support for Hegseth’s nomination, though he noted that some lawmakers have expressed positive opinions about the nominee. "We’re going to be working on his nomination along with a lot of others," Trump said.
Hegseth Denies Allegations, Calls Them Baseless
Hegseth has vehemently denied the allegations, which claim he occasionally showed up to work smelling of alcohol. During an appearance on SiriusXM’s The Megyn Kelly Show, Hegseth argued that the accusations stem from jealousy and vendettas. “They never ask the people closest to me,” Hegseth said, referencing his colleagues at Fox News, who have publicly supported him.
The allegations have not deterred Trump’s allies, who have rallied to support Hegseth’s nomination. The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, has pledged $1 million to bolster Hegseth’s confirmation efforts. Meanwhile, the nominee has been actively meeting with Senators on Capitol Hill to secure their votes.
“We’re going to earn those votes,” Hegseth said during a press conference in Washington, D.C. “As long as Donald Trump wants me in this fight, I’m going to be standing right here.”
