The Philippine Senate will take up the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte when Congress resumes on June 2, Senate President Francis Escudero confirmed. Senators must be sworn in as jurors while Congress is in session before convening as an impeachment court, making immediate action legally impossible, he explained.
The House of Representatives impeached Duterte on Wednesday, making her the second-highest elected official in the country to face impeachment after former President Joseph Estrada in 2000. She faces allegations of misusing public funds as vice president and education minister, amassing unexplained wealth, and issuing threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the first lady, and the House speaker. Duterte has denied all accusations.
The case is expected to draw significant political attention as it unfolds in the coming months.
