US President Joe Biden largely stayed away from speaking about the probe into the sexual harassment allegations that were made against Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. However, following the report that came from the investigation into the allegations, Biden has called for Cuomo to resign.
Speaking at the White House, Biden weighed in on the sexual harassment report presented by New York Attorney General Letitia James that was the result of the independent probe launched into the allegations. The official report revealed that Cuomo sexually harassed 11 women. Cuomo has since denied the allegations against him.
“He should resign,” Biden said to the reporters that were present.
Biden was pressed on whether Cuomo should be impeached should he refuse to step down from his position. The Democratic US leader said the New York state legislature might be considering impeaching Cuomo. “I understand the state legislature may decide to impeach. I do not know that for a fact,” added Biden.
Biden joined many of his fellow Democrats in calling for Cuomo to resign. Following Biden’s remarks on the issue, Democratic New York State House Speaker Carl Heastie announced that the chamber would be looking to end its impeachment inquiry into Cuomo. Biden’s remarks also come four months after he said that should the investigation confirm the allegations of sexual harassment made against Cuomo, then he should step down.
Cuomo was widely seen as a possible contender in the 2024 race should Biden choose not to seek a second term.
In other news, Biden has announced that the US will be providing $100 million in humanitarian aid for Lebanon as the nation is urged to seek reforms. Biden made the announcement during a United Nations-backed donor conference for Lebanon that was hosted by France.
“Today, I’m announcing nearly a $100 million in new humanitarian assistance,” said Biden during the conference. “But no amount of outside assistance will ever be enough if Lebanon’s leaders do not commit to do the hard but necessary work of reforming the economy and combating corruption. It is essential. It has to start now. There’s no time to waste. You know it. We are there to help if you do it.”
