Donald Trump is currently up for reelection. However, with his administration’s approach to the present issues at hand, it appears that he is on shaky ground especially as former vice president Joe Biden is leading over him in public opinion polls. In a recent interview, Trump revealed that he will not accept the results of the upcoming election following Biden’s lead in polls.
In his interview on Fox News Sunday with host Chris Wallace, Trump was pressed about the coronavirus, as well as his opinions on other issues, particularly the election. Wallace asked Trump if he would be willing to accept the outcome of the 2020 election, but Trump did not give a direct answer and instead said that the will have to see. “Look, you--I have to see. No, I’m not going to just say yes. I’m not going to just say no,” said the president.
Wallace also showed Trump the new poll conducted by the network, with Biden leading Trump by eight percentage points. Trump dismissed the results, calling the polls “fake,” and insisted that he was not losing. “First of all, I’m not losing because those are fake polls. They were fake in 2016 and they’re even more fake now,” said Trump.
Trump continued to insist that mail-in voting would lead to voter fraud without any evidence to back up his claim. Trump stated that mail-in voting or absentee voting would lead to a rigged election, despite having previously cast a ballot by mail himself.
Alongside his comments on the election, Trump also compared the Black Lives Matter movement to the display of the Confederate flag, a widely-known symbol of racism. During the interview, Trump said he was not offended by the slogan, and even touched on “cancel culture” as he explained his reasons why. However, Trump repeated his threat against the military’s possible renaming of several army bases that are originally named after Confederate Army generals.
“When people proudly have their Confederate flags, they’re not talking about racism. They love their flag, it represents the South,” said Trump.
Many public establishments and organizations have already placed a ban on the displays of Confederate flags on their premises. The Department of Defense has also taken the Confederate flag out of its list of flags that could be displayed on its property without explicitly stating that they would do so in order not to draw the ire of the president.
