Donald Trump continuously evades the situation of having to release his tax returns despite concerns that are now being raised among prosecutors and officials as well as the public. A New York prosecutor has now warned of a possible attempt by Trump to delay the probe into his financial records.
Reuters reports New York prosecutor Carey Dunne, who serves as the general counsel for District Attorney Cyrus Vance, talked about the possibility of Trump attempting to delay the probe, knowing that there are deadlines. Dunne further noted that constant delays would give Trump the immunity he wants, but the Supreme Court has rejected in a 7-2 vote.
“Let’s not delay kill this case. Justice delayed becomes justice denied,” said Dunne at a federal court hearing in Manhattan to US District Judge Victor Marrero. Marrero previously approved of the schedule that gives the President until July 27 to file to oppose the subpoena into his financial records. Vance will not implement the subpoena until then.
According to Trump’s lawyer William Consovoy, Trump could point out how the scope of the subpoena was “overbroad” and that it resembled the congressional subpoenas that the Supreme Court has rejected to enforce. Consovoy also pointed out that Vance, a Democrat, may be trying to harass Trump perhaps due to political differences.
This goes back to a subpoena issued in August 2019 to Mazars USA, the accounting firm of Trump, to turn over eight years’ worth of personal and corporate tax returns. This subpoena is also linked to Vance’s investigation of Trump and the Trump Organization.
Recently, the Trump administration has attempted to discredit infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci, with several anonymous officials claiming that Dr. Fauci made many incorrect statements, citing previous comments that were revealed to be taken out of context. The latest of which came from White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, who wrote a scathing op-ed criticizing the health expert. Dr. Fauci, who is also a member of the White House coronavirus task force, had often contradicted Trump’s statements, especially when it came to the severity of the pandemic in the United States.
Despite the clashing with officials, Trump has defended Dr. Fauci and said that Navarro’s opinion does not represent the administration. Trump maintained that he still has a good relationship with the health expert. However, last week, Trump personally questioned Dr. Fauci’s credibility.
