Apple is considering releasing its first foldable gadget in the next few years, with a 7- to 8-inch screen that might eventually replace the 8.3-inch iPad Mini.
Apple to Launch Foldable As Early As 2026
That's the latest report from the Korean publication The Elec. According to the source, Apple is considering a release date between 2026 and 2027 for the device.
However, Apple is also actively building an OLED iPad mini, so there is some confusion about the foldable's type and specifications. The industry continues to speculate whether it will be a foldable iPhone or an iPad model.
Samsung Display and LG Display have apparently been delivering Apple examples of 7-inch and 8-inch foldable panels since last year.
Among panel manufacturers, Samsung is thought to be more engaged in developing Apple foldable panels than LG and is the more likely primary supplier of a foldable panel if Apple decides to market them in 2026.
Divergent Visions in Foldable Tech: Apple and Partners Explore Future Possibilities
Apple, Samsung Display, and LG Display all claimed to have "different ideas" concerning the ultra-thin glass material, foldable panel cover window, and hinge concept, which is key to the product's mechanism. These disparities apparently include divergent evaluations of product durability and reliability.
Once mass production is decided, Samsung is expected to produce the foldable panel in the 6th generation A3 or A4 OLED line, which manufactures OLED panels for Apple's iPhones.
According to the source, Apple is also developing a larger 20.5-inch foldable gadget, which is scheduled to be delivered after the 7- to 8-inch tablet. The larger foldable was previously speculated by The Elec, Bloomberg, and Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) analyst Ross Young. Young has previously stated that he expects a foldable tablet-like device in 2026 or 2027.
