Apple has opened pre-orders for all four models in the iPhone 14 series, but not all variants seem to be in demand. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that the new iPhone 14 Plus has generated much less interest than the iPhone 13 mini.
The iPhone 14 Plus is the newest addition to Apple’s smartphone line that, technically, replaced the iPhone 13 mini. As previously reported, the smaller device did not perform as well as Apple expected, even during the iPhone 12 generation. An early report on the iPhone 14 pre-orders suggests the regular model with a bigger form factor could be heading in the same direction.
Kuo reported in a summary of his research notes on the iPhone 14 pre-order results published on Monday that both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus will be available on retail launch day. The analyst suggests this could be a reflection of a “lackluster demand.”
The exact numbers of pre-orders for all iPhone 14 models are not available in the post, but the analyst said the new standard models in both size variants are doing as well as the iPhone SE 3 and iPhone 13 mini. “Apple may cut iPhone 14 and 14 Plus shipment forecasts for November and beyond within a few weeks if the demand for the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus doesn’t improve after the launch,” Kuo wrote.
The 6.1-inch regular iPhone 14 will arrive in stores on Friday, Sept. 16, and the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus will follow on Friday, Oct. 7. As of this writing, the Apple.com order page for the latter indicates it can be delivered on its launch day for orders in the United States. Pre-orders for the baseline iPhone 14 only have 5-7 days of wait times.
These estimated delivery times are far better than the schedules for new orders of iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Both models will be available in stores this Friday as well. But Apple.com indicates that the wait times for new pre-orders now extend to a month or longer, depending on the chosen storage and color options. Kuo noted this suggests a “strong demand” for these variants, which he expects will continue through November.
