Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Ukraine has seen little progress in discussions with the United States over expanding missile defense production, prompting Kyiv to strengthen cooperation with European partners to accelerate weapons manufacturing.
In his nightly video address on Monday, Zelenskiy said efforts to expand anti-ballistic missile production with the U.S. have remained stalled for an extended period. As a result, Ukraine is now focusing on increasing the production of advanced air defense systems within Europe to improve regional security and strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities against ongoing Russian attacks.
The Ukrainian leader stressed that talks with Washington are continuing and emphasized the importance of U.S. leadership in supporting Ukraine during the war with Russia. Zelenskiy noted that American expertise and military cooperation remain critical for Ukraine’s defense strategy, particularly in the development of missile defense technologies and broader security assistance.
Zelenskiy also praised French President Emmanuel Macron for supporting the development of defense systems and acknowledged Europe’s growing role in financing weapons purchases for Ukraine. According to him, European countries have become increasingly important partners in helping Kyiv secure military equipment and strengthen its defense infrastructure.
Despite Europe’s support, Zelenskiy underlined that U.S. involvement remains essential. He said Ukraine expects additional diplomatic initiatives and new proposals from representatives of U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration aimed at advancing peace negotiations and military cooperation.
Diplomatic efforts led by the United States to end the war between Ukraine and Russia have slowed in recent weeks, partly due to increased global attention on tensions involving Iran. Zelenskiy recently stated that Ukraine is awaiting fresh U.S. proposals to move peace talks forward while continuing to seek stronger international backing for its air defense and security needs.
