The White House has ordered a review of SpaceX’s federal contracts, totaling around $22 billion, following a public fallout between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, sources told Reuters. The directive, aimed at the Department of Defense and NASA, seeks detailed audits of the billionaire’s government dealings, potentially preparing the administration for retaliation.
Pentagon officials are also considering limiting SpaceX’s role in a new U.S. missile defense initiative. While it remains unclear if the administration intends to cancel any contracts, the move signals Trump may act on his warning to revoke federal deals with Musk’s companies. “We’ll take a look at everything,” Trump said on June 6 aboard Air Force One.
Musk, previously head of the cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and a senior advisor to Trump, has faced backlash for recent public remarks, including calling for Trump’s impeachment. Although he has tried to de-escalate tensions, the conflict has highlighted the government’s heavy reliance on SpaceX for critical defense and space operations.
SpaceX holds key contracts, including a $5 billion NASA deal for its Dragon spacecraft—currently the only American vehicle capable of ferrying astronauts to the International Space Station—and a classified National Reconnaissance Office agreement to build a spy satellite network. The company may also play a role in Trump’s proposed “Golden Dome” missile shield.
Legal experts have raised concerns over political influence on federal contracts. “Any decision shouldn’t be based on egos but on national interest,” said Scott Amey of the Project on Government Oversight.
Neither SpaceX nor the Defense Department commented. A NASA spokesperson confirmed continued collaboration with industry partners, while the White House emphasized a “rigorous review process” for all contracts.
