PRINCETON JUNCTION, N.J., Dec. 20, 2017 -- As the implementation of EMV at U.S. ATMs continues at a steady pace, some ATM owners and operators have questions about certain chip transaction scenarios. The U.S. Payments Forum released a new white paper today that provides recommendations to help ATM owners prevent common transaction issues, and offers suggestions for troubleshooting problems when they do occur.
The white paper, “EMV Troubleshooting Guide for ATM Owners and Operators,” and can be downloaded at http://www.uspaymentsforum.org/emv-troubleshooting-guide-for-atm-owners-and-operators/.
“The ATM Industry Association (ATMIA) estimates that 80 percent of ATMs will be chip-enabled by the end of 2017i. With the increase in enablement, the ATM industry needs a go-to resource for troubleshooting common problems relating to transactions using chip cards at both chip-enabled and non-chip-enabled terminals,” said Randy Vanderhoof, director of the U.S. Payments Forum. “With this document, the industry now has an easy-to-use resource to answer many of the common questions owners and operators have today.”
Created by the U.S. Payments Forum ATM Working Committee, the white paper covers:
- Best practices on preventing common transaction problems by ensuring data integrity and monitoring transaction activity. The paper addresses both when chip cards are used at chip-enabled and at non-chip enabled ATMs.
- Troubleshooting tips, including how to monitor for possible problem scenarios and how to determine the scope of the issue. The paper reviews several scenarios that could emerge, including fallback, declined transactions and chip transaction reversals.
This white paper is part of the U.S. Payments Forum’s ongoing effort to identify issues and provide guidance and best practices to overcome them to keep moving the U.S. chip migration forward. Other resources created by the Forum relating to EMV chip technology in the U.S. can be found at www.emv-connection.com.
The next ATM Working Committee project is focused on providing an overview of guidelines for accepting contactless transactions at the ATM and developing guidelines for interoperability due to emerging mobile wallet and contactless EMV card technology. Additional resources created by the ATM Working Committee are available at http://www.uspaymentsforum.org/working-committees-sigs/atm-working-committee/.
