Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation Monday renaming Palm Beach International Airport after former and current President Donald Trump, marking yet another addition to a growing list of American institutions, programs, and landmarks bearing the commander-in-chief's name.
The airport rename requires a formal request to the Federal Aviation Administration, which must update flight charting and navigation databases before physical signage can be changed. Complementing the move, Representative Brian Mast introduced a bill last week to change the airport's three-letter code from PBI to DJT — Trump's initials. Florida had previously approved donating a downtown Miami property to house Trump's future presidential library, further cementing the president's ties to the state he has called home since relocating from New York in 2019, where he once resided in a penthouse at Trump Tower before establishing primary residence at his Mar-a-Lago resort in West Palm Beach.
The airport rename is far from an isolated gesture. Trump's name now appears across a wide range of American institutions and initiatives. The U.S. Treasury announced that American paper currency will carry Trump's signature starting this summer, making him the first sitting president to sign U.S. money. His name has also been attached to a new class of Navy warships, a visa program for wealthy foreign nationals, a government-run prescription drug website, and federal children's savings accounts.
In December, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the United States Institute of Peace building in Washington both added Trump's name following administrative changes under his influence. A federal arts panel also recently approved a commemorative gold coin featuring his likeness, part of a series celebrating America's 250th anniversary in 2025.
Additionally, Trump reportedly explored linking infrastructure funding for a New York Hudson River tunnel to Democratic support for renaming Washington Dulles Airport and New York Penn Station in his honor.
