“Borderlands” fans waiting for the release of “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands” this month just got another good news. The game is confirmed to support cross-platform play -- including PlayStation systems -- at launch. And Gearbox may have hinted at the same feature happening for “Borderlands 3” as well.

“Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands” is launching next week, and Gearbox president Randy Pitchford announced on Twitter that players across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S will be able to play together as soon as the game is out. “Incredible work from the engineers at Gearbox Software with thanks to our partners at 2k Games and 1st parties, including Sony, for working together on this,” Pitchford wrote.

The announcement may have come as quite a surprise considering what happened to “Borderlands 3” last year. It can be recalled that Gearbox released an update in 2021 that added crossplay, excluding PlayStation.

In a Twitter post last May, Pitchford implied that the developers meant for PS consoles to be included in the crossplay support for the game. But for 2K to certify the update’s release, Pitchford noted that they were “required by the publisher to remove crossplay support for PlayStation consoles.”

Pitchford’s post also came amid the then-ongoing Epic v. Apple trial, which led to the release of several documents and negotiations among different video game companies. One of the notable discoveries (via The Verge) during the trial was a Sony document called “cross-platform policy, requirements, and process” that tackled a monthly compensation to Sony from publishers and developers who wished to include PlayStation systems in their games’ crossplay features.

Now, the “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands” crossplay support at launch may be signaling a significant development for “Borderlands 3” as well. In response to a Twitter user on Sunday, Pitchford seemingly hinted at a possible update that would finally include PlayStation in the “Borderlands 3” crossplay support. “The future addition of PlayStation to crossplay for BL3 is now what I would consider to be inevitable,” the Gearbox executive said. “More info to come as soon as we have it.”

For now, fans can rejoice at the fact that they can play “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands” with their friends immediately, regardless of the gaming platform they use. The “Borderlands” spin-off will be released on Friday, March 25.
