PRINCETON JUNCTION, N.J., Feb. 23, 2016 -- Today, 12 percent of patient records are mismatched in the U.S., and 19 percent of healthcare CIOs reported adverse healthcare events as a result of patient misidentification. On top of that, financial losses from healthcare fraud amount to tens of billion dollars a year. A presentation organized by the Smart Card Alliance Health and Human Services Council will address these issues, the causes and new identity-centric, credential-based approaches for patient identity proofing and digital record matching that solve the problems at the HIMSS Annual Conference, Feb. 29-Mar. 4, 2016 in Las Vegas.
The session, “Patient Identity and Digital Record Matching: A New Approach,” will take place on March 1 from 11:30am – 12:30 pm PT in the Sands Expo Convention Center’s Human Nature Theater. Speaking on behalf of the Smart Card Alliance Health and Human Services Council are Tess Coody, CEO of Tenet Health and Roderick Bell II, former CIO of Tenet Health.
“The issues of patient misidentification and mismatching, and potential solutions, are poorly understood in the healthcare community because the causes are complex, cross many aspects of organizations’ operations and have technology implications,” said Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance. “This session at HIMSS will provide clarity into these problems, and provide industry-recommended best practices for using an identity-centric, credential-based model to improve patient identification and record matching, and significantly reduce fraud.”
Through this session, attendees will be able to:
- Identify the negative impacts of the current misidentification and mismatching problems in healthcare, such as poor patient care, inconvenience for patients and providers, and lack of patient safety
- Evaluate the use of strong credentials for fraud reduction based on their ability to strengthen transaction processing and eliminate vulnerabilities in the healthcare payments system
- Initiate change in the way the U.S. healthcare system identifies patients and manages care by implementing an identity-centric, credential-based patient matching and identity management model
- Summarize the methods and solutions that the healthcare provider presenting in the session used to address their identity management issues
- Appraise the success of the implementation case study detailed in the session and the extent to which identity management challenges were overcome
