Meteor showers are special because they occur only rarely and the heavenly streaks of light that they produce is just a wonder to behold. There’s something awe-inspiring about such uncontrollable events occurring that produce such beauty in the eyes of people. Unfortunately, a private space company is planning to take that majesty and bottle it up to sell as a commercial product in the form of artificial meteor showers.
The company Astro Live Experience is set to demonstrate its services by inducing an artificial shower of light over Japan in 2020, Tech Times reports. The heavenly display will be visible over an area with a radius of 200 kilometers and can be seen over the cities of Hiroshima, Iwakuni, Takamatsu, and Matsuyama.
As to how the company is planning on actually achieving this, a satellite hovering 350 kilometers over the Earth’s surface will drop pellets that contain different colors. These pellets would then burn out as they enter the atmosphere, giving off the right colors as they sizzle.
With this service, anyone can basically order a meteor shower to appear over their skies if they can afford to pay for it. At $40,000 for each show, it would certainly make for an impressive display. Perhaps it could even replace fireworks, which would be a welcome change to pets.
On that note, there are concerns about unintended consequences with regards to the pellets hitting satellites by accident, Futurism notes. Even if the company takes steps to ensure that the pellets don’t hit satellites by basically tracking them, there are examples of satellites that are unable to be tracked such as the ones used to spy on other countries.
If these machines are struck by the pellets, it could cause devastation. If the satellites fall towards the Earth, they could cause a considerable amount of damage.
