North Korea Vows to Strengthen Nuclear Arsenal Amid U.S. Tensions

North Korea said Monday that it will continue strengthening its nuclear weapons program, arguing that Washington’s hostile policy toward Pyongyang remains unchanged and poses an ongoing threat to the country’s sovereignty and security.

In a statement carried by state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), North Korea’s Foreign Ministry described its nuclear arsenal as an “absolute guarantee” of national sovereignty. Pyongyang made clear that it has no intention of weakening its nuclear capabilities as long as it believes the United States maintains a confrontational approach toward the country.

The Foreign Ministry also dismissed expectations that tensions on the Korean Peninsula and across the wider region could ease under current conditions. It said anticipating an improvement in the security environment would be “meaningless” while Washington continues what North Korea considers a hostile policy.

Pyongyang added that its own policy toward the United States has not changed, signaling that relations between the two countries remain firmly deadlocked.

The latest statement reinforces North Korea’s longstanding position that its nuclear weapons are essential for deterring potential military threats and protecting the country’s sovereignty. North Korean officials have repeatedly rejected international demands for denuclearization and have instead emphasized plans to expand the country’s strategic weapons capabilities.

Relations between North Korea and the United States have remained strained amid disputes over Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs and Washington’s security cooperation with regional allies. North Korea has frequently criticized U.S.-led military activities in the region, arguing that they increase security risks and justify the continued development of its nuclear deterrent.

Monday’s comments indicate that Pyongyang sees little immediate prospect for a diplomatic breakthrough with Washington. By reiterating that both its U.S. policy and commitment to nuclear weapons remain unchanged, North Korea is signaling that strengthening its nuclear arsenal will continue to be a central part of its national security strategy.
