A testament to the overwhelming popularity of Epic Games’ Fortnite Battle Royale is how it seems to give Twitch streamer “Ninja” the ability to continue to break record after record, starting with his gaming sessions with the singer, Drake. Over the weekend, the streamer did it again by playing against 233 other people in a series of high-stakes eSports matches held in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Now, there are several things to unpack here, starting with the fact that the live event was held at the Luxor Hotel and Casino in the Esports Arena Las Vegas, Forbes reports. During the event, both regular players and competitive players took on “Ninja” over nine matches, where participants had the chance to earn real cash rewards.
$2,500 would go to those who won matches and $2,500 would go to those who managed to kill him, which amounted to around $50,000 in total prize money given away. At around 75 to 85 players per match, the event involved a considerable level of intensity that is rarely seen in any eSports events outside of global competitions.
The success of the event was further compounded by the fact that it’s unlike any other occasion in the video game industry. It wasn’t just an eSports meetup, after all. It was also something of a meet-and-greet for “Ninja” and his fans, and a way for streamers and players to simply hang out.
As a result of this extremely exciting and unique development, the streamer managed to attract 680,000 simultaneous viewers on Twitch at peak, The Verge reports. Of course, hardly any of this is surprising, owing to the fact that “Ninja” is already a highly accomplished eSports competitor and gamer.
He has even developed a reputation for forming friendships with celebrities, which is not exactly something gamers are known for. Overall, the event was an adrenaline-pumping occasion that showed how suitable Fortnite Battle Royale is at being an eSports prospect.
