There’s no denying that the Battle Royale format was popularized by PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, which revolved around the idea of putting 100 players against each other in a single map. Since then, PUBG has become a monster of a property, but it isn’t the only one. Fortnite Battle Royale follows the same basic format while applying its own twists. This has allowed it to eclipse PUBG.
As Forbes notes, there are several reasons why Fortnite Battle Royale has absolutely dominated the market in recent months. For one thing, it’s free, which already gave it a significant advantage over its paid counterparts like PUBG. There’s also the fact that Epic Games’ own offering is relatively free of cheaters, which allows the developers to focus on churning out awesome features on a regular basis.
Those who have been playing Fortnite Battle Royale since the early days can attest to the massive changes that the game has gone through. Anyone who played the title on day one who quit and then came back today would be absolutely floored by how much has been added.
There’s also the fact that the game is available on the PC, Xbox One, and the PS4, while PUBG is only available on the first two. With Fortnite set to become available on mobile devices while also adding crossplay, it seems inevitable that it will soon become the king in this arena.
Epic’s latest data with regards to the number of concurrent players of Fortnite Battle Royale placed it at 3.2 million, Engadget reports. This was in February 8th and was bound to have long surpassed it by now.
Suffice it to say, although both Fortnite and PUBG are still seeing rising numbers, the former is performing better in every aspect that counts compared to the latter. The developers of Fortnite have grand plans for the game and have an efficient system for implementing those plans. In comparison, the developers of PUBG have notoriously said that they have no idea where to go next.
Even if they did, they are currently bogged down by the huge influx of cheaters to add new features to PUBG. Is it really any wonder that Fortnite is the more popular Battle Royale game now?
