Apple's First Foldable to Be Tablet or Notebook, Not iPhone, Sources Say

Apple's journey to a foldable device hits a snag over display durability concerns.

Apple is currently deliberating on the design of its first foldable device as the development of the project accelerates, DigiTimes reports.

Apple Edges Closer to Foldable Device Debut, Targets High-Quality Design

According to MacRumors, DigiTimes asserts, in a paywalled report citing Taiwanese supply chain sources, that Apple has spent at least five years developing its first foldable product.

The publication's assertion that the foldable will resemble a tablet or notebook rather than an iPhone "larger device" confirms earlier speculations. Currently, it is reported that design efforts for the device are nearing completion in advance of mass production.

As hinge mechanisms for foldable devices have become more sophisticated in recent years, developing a panel that satisfies Apple's quality standards is reportedly the primary challenge for its foldable.

According to the report, Apple's purported suspension of Samsung's foldable display panel development and internal reorganization to reallocate Vision Pro engineers to the foldable project are not contradictory actions because the company places an overwhelming emphasis on quality.

In addition, the report clarified that Apple has not ceased developing foldable devices; instead, it claimed that the organization now operates numerous departments tasked with overseeing distinct foldable product lines. The debut of Apple's inaugural foldable device is not anticipated until at least 2025.

Apple Pauses Foldable iPhone Development Amid Display Durability Concerns

A new speculation asserts that Apple has halted the development of a foldable iPhone because displays supplied by suppliers failed to meet the company's stringent testing requirements.

Fixed Focus Digital, a tech video blogger from Guangdong based on Weibo with a substantial Chinese audience, claims that Apple has been conducting tests on competing foldable phones since 2016 for its foldable device research and development.

It has been reported that at least one of the foldable devices Apple has been testing incorporates a Samsung display. Samsung, a prominent provider of display modules utilized in Apple devices, has reportedly previously furnished the company with foldable display prototypes.

According to a recent report, Samsung has also been attempting to improve its operational efficiency in advance of Apple's first foldable products by integrating the foldable device expertise it has gained since 2019.

Apple has halted the entire project for the foreseeable future, or at least until a display that can meet its stringent requirements is developed, according to the source of today's rumor, which states that Samsung's most recent folding panels "broke down after a few days" during the company's rigorous internal testing.

Apple has been actively developing prototypes of at least two foldable iPhones, according to a report from MacRumors earlier this month. This development follows more than five years of research and development. Despite rumors that the two iPhone prototypes could be folded in half as wide as a clamshell, Apple has not included them in its product roadmap for 2024 or 2025. According to the report, they may still be discontinued if the foldable iPhones fail to satisfy Apple's criteria.

The Weibo account that claims to have obtained information regarding the suspension of the foldable project at Apple is an unidentified entity with no history of Apple rumors; thus, skepticism is merited regarding its veracity.

Additionally, whether still being determined aim affects Apple's ongoing development of a foldable iPad is unknown. Apple is rumored to be more interested in developing a device of this nature, which might be thicker than a foldable iPhone because users would not carry it in their pocket. It would not be required to meet the same stringent durability standards as an iPhone.

The Elec, a Korean publication, reported earlier this month that Apple is contemplating the release of its first foldable device, a 7- to 8-inch device that could ultimately supplant the 8.3-inch iPad mini, within the next few years.
