Irene Penesis is an Associate Professor in the National Centre in Maritime Engineering and Hydrodynamics at the Australian Maritime College (AMC), specialist institute of the University of Tasmania. The areas of her research includes; optimising the performance of wave and tidal energy devices utilising AMC's specialised hydrodynamic test facilities, assessing the technical viability of these devices when deployed in real ocean environments and their environmental impact, and the assessment of wave and tidal energy resources in Tasmania. A/Prof Irene Penesis leads the AMC ocean renewable energy research group. She has received government research funding primarily aimed at building Australia's capability for ocean renewable energy, funded by the ARC (Linkage), ARENA, industry, project partners CSIRO, SUT, UQ and others. In addition, supervises PhD candidates and undergraduate engineering students in the field. Irene holds the substantive role as Chair of Marine Renewable Energy Specialist Committee of the International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC), a peak international body focused on the prediction of hydrodynamic performance of marine installations via physical model experiments and numerical modelling.
