Professor of Spanish, Amherst College
I'm a scholar of contemporary Spain focused on cultural studies, including literature, film, history and new media. My research is on Spain's role in World War II and the Holocaust, in particular the Spaniards who were deported to Mauthausen and other Nazi concentration camps as political prisoners. Related to this scholarly interest, I investigate the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship, activists and memorial projects, historical memory, exiles and refugees in France, artists and intellectuals, popular culture and contemporary political movements.
I have published two books: "Spaniards in Mauthausen: Representations of a Nazi Concentration Camp, 1940-2015" (University of Toronto Press, 2018) and "Genre Fusion: A New Approach to History, Fiction, and Memory in Contemporary Spain" (Purdue University Press, 2014). I'm also the co-editor of "Spain, the Second World War, and the Holocaust: History and Representation" with Gina Herrmann (U of Toronto P, 2020).
I write and publish in English and Spanish.
