I am a demographer and social statistician working on issues affecting low- and middle- income countries. My main research interests include menstruation, son preference, fertility transition, sexual and reproductive health, violence against women, and gender statistics. I have expertise in the demography of both Asia and Africa, with a particular focus on Nepal and South Asia.

I am currently leading a UKRI funded project looking at menstrual justice in Nepal and Guatemala, and low- and middle-income countries more broadly. The aim of this project is to improve women and girl’s menstrual experiences and to reduce negative impacts of menstruation and related practices with a particular focus on period pain.

I am a Reader in Social Policy at the University of Bath and Honorary Secretary of the British Society for Population Studies. Previously, I have worked at the University of Oxford, the University of Southampton and the United Nations Statistics Division.
