Argentine President Javier Milei is backing efforts to bring Formula 1 racing back to Argentina, nearly three decades after the country last hosted a Grand Prix.

Milei said Sunday that his government would work toward securing Argentina’s return to the Formula 1 calendar and that he plans to personally promote the initiative during upcoming meetings with international motorsport officials.

Speaking in a radio interview, Milei confirmed he will attend the International Automobile Federation’s (FIA) Americas Congress, scheduled for August 31 to September 2 in Buenos Aires. The event, hosted by the Automovil Club Argentino, will provide Argentine officials with an opportunity to strengthen ties with the global motorsport community.

“We are going to work to have Formula 1 back in Argentina again,” Milei said, adding that he intends to meet directly with FIA representatives during the congress.

Argentina has not staged a Formula 1 Grand Prix since 1998, but preparations for a potential comeback have gathered momentum in 2026.

Since the beginning of the year, renovation work has been underway at the Oscar and Juan Galvez Autodrome in Buenos Aires. Officials are seeking to upgrade the historic circuit to FIA Grade 1 status, the certification required for a venue to host Formula 1 races.

The Buenos Aires circuit has a long history with international motorsport and is already scheduled to welcome MotoGP in 2027. Renovations are now being accelerated as Argentina seeks to obtain the necessary FIA licence and position the venue for a possible Formula 1 race in future seasons.

Milei’s involvement could add political support to the project as Argentina looks to re-establish itself as a major destination on the global motorsport calendar.

While no Formula 1 return date has been confirmed, the combination of government backing, the upcoming FIA Americas Congress and improvements to the Buenos Aires circuit could strengthen Argentina’s chances of hosting its first Grand Prix since 1998.
