U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff may visit the region on Sunday if negotiations on the next phase of the Gaza ceasefire between Israel and Hamas progress, according to Axios reporter Barak Ravid. An Israeli delegation is set to travel to Doha or Cairo in the coming days for discussions, with Qatar and Egypt mediating.
Witkoff had initially planned to visit earlier but postponed due to U.S. diplomatic efforts related to Russia and Ukraine. The ongoing ceasefire, which began on January 19, is nearing the end of its first phase, during which Israeli hostages in Gaza and Palestinian detainees in Israel were exchanged. The U.N. has condemned the poor treatment of captives.
Although the truce has largely held, both sides have accused each other of violations. If no agreement is reached by Friday, the situation could escalate, leading to renewed fighting or a freeze in negotiations, preventing further hostage releases. Israel may also restrict aid to Gaza if talks stall.
The situation remains critical, with diplomatic efforts intensifying to prevent a return to conflict.
