U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed Thursday that the United States was not involved in Israel’s recent airstrikes against Iran, calling the military action a “unilateral decision” by Israel. Rubio emphasized that the Biden administration’s primary concern is safeguarding American personnel and assets in the Middle East.
"Tonight, Israel took unilateral action against Iran. We are not involved in strikes against Iran, and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region," Rubio said in a late-night statement. He warned Iran directly: “Let me be clear—Iran should not target U.S. interests or personnel.”
According to Rubio, Israeli officials informed Washington that the strike was a necessary act of self-defense. The attack reportedly occurred late Thursday U.S. time (early Friday in the Middle East), and Iranian state media confirmed hearing explosions in Tehran. This development significantly raises the stakes in a region already destabilized by ongoing conflicts, including Israel's war in Gaza since October 2023.
The escalation comes as diplomatic efforts appear stalled. Despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s earlier push for a revised nuclear deal to limit Iran’s uranium enrichment, talks have made little progress. Rubio noted that the administration is taking necessary precautions to protect U.S. forces and is in constant coordination with regional allies.
Tensions in the Middle East remain high, with fears of further retaliation from Iran or its proxies. Rubio’s statement underscores Washington’s attempt to avoid being dragged into direct conflict while reaffirming its commitment to defend American interests.
This latest incident highlights the fragile balance of power in the region and the growing risk of broader military confrontation involving major powers.
