U.S. President Donald Trump sharply criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, warning he was “playing with fire” by rejecting ceasefire talks with Ukraine as Russian forces made gains in the northeastern Sumy region. Trump’s comments follow some of the deadliest drone and missile strikes in the three-year war, with Moscow accused of stalling peace negotiations.

On Truth Social, Trump stated, “If it weren’t for me, really bad things would have already happened in Russia,” emphasizing frustration over Putin’s actions. Despite their historically cordial relationship, Trump’s recent posts reflect growing tension. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev responded, warning of World War III and dismissing Trump’s remarks.

Meanwhile, Russia has captured four villages—Novenke, Basivka, Veselivka, and Zhuravka—near the Ukrainian border. Sumy Governor Oleh Hryhorov confirmed the takeover, noting prior evacuations. The Kremlin claims it’s working on a ceasefire memorandum, but Kyiv and its allies accuse Moscow of using diplomacy as a delay tactic while advancing militarily.

Ukraine has launched drone attacks deep into Russia in retaliation, temporarily shutting down several Moscow airports. Russian forces, using motorcycles and drone support, continue pushing toward a “buffer zone” along the border. Ukraine had previously used Sumy as a launch point into Russia’s Kursk region before retreating.

Trump has not yet implemented new sanctions against Russia, though officials say a package is ready. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is urging increased U.S. military support as Russia intensifies its attacks in Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia.

As the Kremlin expands its multi-front offensive, fears of a wider escalation grow. Trump’s stark warning adds to mounting global pressure on Putin to accept an immediate 30-day ceasefire and de-escalate hostilities.
