U.S. President Donald Trump hinted that peace talks between Ukraine and Russia may be progressing, but warned that patience is wearing thin. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “There’s a point at which you just have to either put up or shut up,” adding that developments in the negotiations would become clear soon.
This comes a day after Trump expressed frustration with Moscow, urging Russia to "get moving" toward a peace agreement. His administration is reportedly weighing secondary sanctions on countries continuing to buy Russian oil, should the Kremlin delay further.
Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, recently met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a potential ceasefire. However, diplomatic efforts have reportedly stalled due to disagreements on the conditions required for a full cessation of hostilities.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Turkey, praised Trump for having what he described as a clearer understanding of the conflict than other Western leaders. Lavrov highlighted Trump’s previous criticism of NATO’s eastward expansion, calling it a key root cause of the war.
Lavrov also addressed a fragile agreement between Ukraine and Russia to stop targeting each other’s energy infrastructure. He accused Kyiv of continuing strikes on Russian facilities and provided documentation to Turkish and U.S. officials. Ukraine has made similar claims against Russia despite a U.S.-backed moratorium aimed at de-escalating such attacks.
The Ukraine conflict, which began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022, remains one of the most pressing global crises. As diplomatic tensions rise, pressure mounts on both sides to honor ceasefire agreements and move toward a lasting peace. Trump’s latest comments suggest the U.S. may intensify efforts to broker a resolution.
