U.S. President Donald Trump has called for an immediate end to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s long-running corruption trial, labeling the case a “witch hunt.” In a social media post on Wednesday, Trump described Netanyahu as a “great war time prime minister” and credited him for playing a key role in the recent destruction of Iran’s nuclear facilities and the brokered ceasefire that followed.
Trump asserted that the legal proceedings against Netanyahu are “politically motivated,” urging Israeli authorities to “CANCEL, IMMEDIATELY” the trial or issue a pardon. The Israeli leader was indicted in 2019 on charges of fraud, bribery, and breach of trust—allegations he has consistently denied. Despite facing court since 2020, Netanyahu has remained a dominant force in Israeli politics, securing a decisive election victory in 2022.
The trial has deeply polarized the Israeli public, sparking widespread and prolonged protests. However, legal proceedings were temporarily postponed following the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel. A new court hearing is scheduled for next week.
Trump’s comments come amid heightened geopolitical tensions and may add further pressure on Israel’s judicial system. The remarks have reignited debate over Netanyahu’s legal future and the broader implications for Israeli democracy.
This development highlights the intersection of politics, law, and international diplomacy as global leaders weigh in on Israel’s internal affairs.
